A local court sent Vikas Malik, president of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, Chandigarh, to 14-day judicial custody today.

Malik was produced before the court after his two-day police remand ended today. He was arrested by the UT police on Friday in a case registered against him under Sections 115(2), 126(2), 190, 191(2), 351(2) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on July 1.

An advocate, Ranjit Singh, has alleged in his complaint that when he, along with a woman advocate, visited Malik’s office on the High Court premises for service of summons on July 1, the accused and his associates assaulted him. He suffered injuries on the head, face and chest.

Later, the police added Sections 109 and 299 of the BNS and 3(1) R. 3(1) 5 of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act) 1989 and amended Act 2016, to the case.

Counsel Bhag Singh Suhag, Ravinder Singh Bassi and Abhey Joshi appeared on behalf of Malik. The police did not demand further remand of the accused. — TNS

Had assaulted lawyer in his office

Advocate Ranjit Singh was allegedly assaulted by Vikas Malik when he visited his office on the High Court premises for service of summons on July 1.
