In view of the emerging situation, with rising cases and various containment zones being made in the city, it’s not feasible to open the university at this point, said Prof SK Tomar, Dean Student Welfare.

“The PU authorities will review the situation as and when it improves and necessary steps will be taken to open the university accordingly,” said Prof Tomar.

He though said “online classes and examinations will continue as per schedule”.

Various students’ bodies have been pitching for opening of the university. “The authorities are ready for a dialogue with the student bodies,” said Prof Tomar.

He further said all the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the UT Administration related to Covid were being followed by the PU administration.

Meanwhile, students of various PU departments have announced to boycott online classes.

Sources said students from Theatre Department, Public Administration and Social Work, and Punjabi Department have written to their respective chairpersons for boycotting the online classes.

Since the imposition of lockdown last year, students are being taught through online mode at all Panjab University departments.
