The incident occurred around 8.30 pm when the bus was carrying around 12 passengers.
The bus, operating on route number 22 from Sector 43 bus stand to IT Park, was nearing the Manimajra police post when there were sparks in the front section of the vehicle. Reacting swiftly, the driver and conductor acted with presence of mind, bringing the bus to a halt and evacuating all passengers without delay.
Despite the timely evacuation, the bus was soon engulfed in flames. Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted and began efforts to douse the fire. By the time the fire services intervened, the vehicle was completely consumed by the blaze.
Initial reports suggest a short circuit may have triggered the fire, though the exact cause remains unconfirmed. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Eyewitnesses said that high flames were seen rising from the burning bus. Officials stated that had the incident occurred during peak hours or if the bus had been more crowded, the risk to life could have been considerably higher.
The Fire Department and Chandigarh Transport Undertaking are expected to conduct further investigation into the cause of the fire and assess potential safety lapses.
