Cyber fraudsters dupe woman of Rs 1.8 lakh

A resident of Panchkula was duped of Rs 1.80 lakh in a cyber-fraud in the name of earning from home. She said she came across a web link about earning money while working from home on Instagram. Upon clicking it, she was added to a WhatsApp group, and advised to complete small tasks, such as clicking the like button on various videos to earn money.

The scammers directed her to download Telegram and like various videos on it. In the beginning they paid her Rs 200 for liking a video. The scammers then asked her to send them money in the name of making purchases in bitcoin. She sent Rs 1,000 and 2,000, for which she was paid Rs 1,300 and Rs 2,600, respectively. The woman said, “They gained my trust and demanded more money. By the time I understood the scam, they had already duped me of Rs 1.80 lakh.

The Panchkula police have registered a case under Sections 316 (2), 318 (4) and 61 of the BNS at the cybercrime police station. In a similar case, Nirmal, a resident of Sector 14, was duped of Rs 1.82 lakh in the name of earning from home while sending likes on online videos.
