Dr Harjinder Singh Jakhu, Founder President of Jai Bhim United Voice of Punjab, has condemned the alleged abetment to suicide of Haryana IPS officer Y Poorn Kumar and the recent incident where a lawyer threw a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai. Dr Jakhu described both events as “serious threats to Indian democracy.”

In a press statement issued here, Dr Jakhu criticised the Narendra Modi-led central government for systematically depriving the Dalit community of their constitutional right to live with dignity. He emphasised that despite constitutional safeguards introduced by Dr BR Ambedkar to ensure education and equality for Dalits, the BJP governments at both the Centre and in Haryana have undermined these rights.

Dr Jakhu expressed grave concern that even senior Dalit officers like Y Poorn Kumar, who achieved high ranks through merit, are subjected to humiliation and harassment, leading to tragic outcomes like suicide. He extended his condolences to the late officer’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar and called for the strictest legal action against the police officials responsible for his death, demanding they be “sent behind bars.”

In addition, Dr Jakhu called for the lawyer who threw a shoe at CJI Gavai to be charged under the National Security Act (NSA), labelling the act as an “attack on the dignity of the judiciary.”

Accusing the BJP and RSS of promoting a “Manuwadi ideology” across the country, Dr Jakhu claimed that this mind set fosters injustice, oppression and violence against Dalits. He pointed out that, even after 75 years of Independence, Dalits continue to face caste-based discrimination, whether as ordinary citizens or senior officials.

Dr Jakhu further alleged that the Modi government encourages social unrest based on caste and religion, with the ruling party’s agenda aiming to “push Dalits back into slavery” and to “tamper with the Constitution.” He called for Dalits across India to unite and launch a nationwide struggle “to save the country and the Constitution.”

Dr Jakhu also announced that the Jai Bhim United Voice of Punjab team would visit Chandigarh to meet the family of the late IPS officer Y Poorn Kumar to offer condolences.

Among those accompanying him will be Principal Keval Singh, Gurdeep Singh Dhuddi, Engineer Happy Kaul, Harvinder Singh Heera, Kunwar Jagbir Singh Sahoongra, Mohan Mahinder, Mahinder Singh Mansa, Balveer Kaur Pathlawa, Kulwinder Kaur Kartarpur, Amarjeet Kaur Dhandra, Sanjeev Moolnivasi, Ashwani Bhagania, Satpal Kotrani and Manjeet Kaur.
