Emergency admissions halted as attendant roughs up PGI doctor

Doctors refused fresh admissions to the PGI Emergency after an attendant, accompanying a 40-year-old woman patient, allegedly manhandled a Resident Doctor on Monday night. However, normal service was restored after a few hours as senior doctors spoke with the agitating staff.

An altercation occurred between a Resident Doctor and an attendant in Hall C of the Emergency complex, briefly disrupting services. The incident was promptly reported to the PGI police post, Sector 12, with a request for filing an institutional FIR against the attendant of the patient. According to sources, the 40-year-old patient, who complained of uneasiness, reached the Emergency. The attendant rushed her inside the Emergency. When the doctors allegedly asked him to wait, heated arguments took place between them. Sources said the attendant allegedly slapped a senior resident doctor on duty.

Soon after the incident, the doctors gathered and demanded action against the attendant.

Members of the Resident Doctors Union also gathered outside the Emergency and called for police action against the attendant. The doctors had refused to take fresh admissions for about three hours.

“The patient was admitted to the (Emergency) Ward C and was stable. However, tempers ran high as the attendant manhandled the doctor,” said one of the doctors.

While the doctors halted work and gathered in unity, the patients kept waiting outside Emergency. After a complaint by the doctors, the police detained the attendant.
