Fallen trees stop Chandigarh cyclists in their tracks

Several trees have been lying on cycle tracks, disrupting the movement of cyclists in the city.

Tree branches broke and fell on cycle tracks due to the rain and squall on May 30. However, many of these have not been removed yet.

As per the Municipal Corporation, as many as 75 trees were damaged and fell in different parts of the city.

During a random check, tree branches were found lying on the cycle tracks along various roads, including Sectors 32/33, 46/45, 44/45 and Sector 28 near Himachal Bhawan.

The cyclists halt on finding the track blocked, lift their cycle to the main road and move on. Some of them were seen avoiding the cycle tracks.

Amitesh Kumar, a cyclist, said, “We understand that many trees fell on the day, but it does not mean that these will not be removed for many days. Besides blocking our way, these may injure commuters.”

“The authorities must get these tracks cleared as soon as possible. They have all the machines, vehicles and the manpower to do the needful,” said another cyclist, Ramesh Rawal.

Besides, broken branches were found on some roads also. Officials said it would take some time to remove a large number of broken trees and branches.
