First batch of 400 civil defence volunteers passes out

The UT Administration today organised the first-ever Passing Out Parade of Civil Defence Volunteers at the Sports Complex, Sector 7, here. Around 400 trained volunteers, who have undergone comprehensive classroom training at MGSIPA, Sector 26, followed by intensive field training under the guidance of Army officers at Chandimandir Cantonment and officials of Chandigarh Police, participated in the event.

UT Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma, who was the chief guest, reviewed the parade, lauded the discipline of the volunteers and encouraged them to continue serving society with commitment and dedication.

“The discipline and coordination we have witnessed today are not merely the result of training, but a reflection of your commitment to serve society and the nation,” the Chief Secretary remarked, adding that Civil Defence is not just an institution, but “a sentiment, a sacred responsibility and a pledge that whenever the motherland calls, we shall be the first to rise”.

He emphasised that the initiative has significantly strengthened Chandigarh’s disaster preparedness and embodies the spirit of volunteerism. “You have not been trained to fight wars, but to save lives, yet you are no less than a soldier,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Nishant Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Controller Civil Defence, highlighted that this was the first such initiative in the country to involve Civil Defence volunteers in a structured manner. He also appreciated the enthusiasm of the residents of Chandigarh for wholeheartedly coming forward to join as volunteers.

The trained volunteers will play a vital role in supporting the civil administration during disaster situations.

Mandip Singh Brar, Home Secretary; Pardeep Kumar, Special Commissioner, Municipal Corporation; and Kanwardeep Kaur, SSP, UT, were among the officials present on the occasion.

Kataria attends valedictory function

A valedictory function marking the passing out of Civil Defence volunteers was held at Tagore Theatre today. Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, who was the chief guest, planted a ‘Sindoor paudha’ to symbolise the spirit of Operation Sindoor, a living reminder of preparedness, resilience and the collective will to safeguard society in times of crisis.

Kataria, accompanied by other dignitaries, toured the exhibition organised by Civil Defence, Chandigarh Traffic Police, the Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). A documentary on Civil Defence volunteers was screened and an official handbook for CDVs was released.
