A pall of gloom spread across the local sporting fraternity, as 29-year-old Simrat Singh breathed his last, following medical complications. A seven-time baseball and softball All-India Inter-University position holder, Gill was posted at Bhavan Vidyalaya, New Chandigarh. He represented Chandigarh in school national baseball and softball championships and also represented the country in the Presidential Baseball Cup, Tehran, Iran. The Indian team had won a gold medal in this championship. His father, Dr Gurcharan Singh Gill, is an assistant professor of physical education at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26. — TNS
