Leading neurologists from Fortis Hospital, Mohali, emphasised the importance of a holistic and personalised approach to managing Parkinson’s disease. The team, including Dr Sudesh Prabhakar, Dr Anupam Jindal, Dr Nishit Sawal, and Dr Ravneet Kaur, discussed the causes, symptoms, and treatment modalities of the disease during a press conference on World Parkinson’s Day.

Dr Sudesh Prabhakar noted that while Parkinson’s disease is typically diagnosed in individuals over 60 years old, it can also affect younger populations. Symptoms include tremors, rigidity, slowed movement, and communication problems, as well as non-motor symptoms like sleep disturbances and depression.

Dr Nishit Sawal highlighted the benefits of liquid L-dopa formulations and millet-based diets in managing Parkinson’s disease. The absorption of L-Dopa, the primary medication for Parkinson’s, increases significantly when administered via LCAS formulation (Liquid Carbidopa Ascorbic Acid Solution). This is particularly useful for advanced cases where the effect of tablets decreases and lasts for a shorter duration. Millet-based diets also enhance L-Dopa absorption by having fewer competing amino acids than cereal diets.

Dr Ravneet Kaur discussed the role of genetics in determining Parkinson’s disease. Changes in specific genes can increase the risk of developing the condition, especially with a strong family history. Genetic testing can provide valuable insights into inherited risk, enabling informed health management and family planning decisions.

Dr Anupam Jindal explained the surgical treatment options for Parkinson’s disease. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) involves inserting electrodes into the brain and connecting them to a battery in the chest, enhancing functional ability and improving tremors, walking, and medication side effects. Alternatively, ablative procedures like pallidotomy and thalamotomy are available, although the latter is typically used only for tremors.
