Chandigarh: Fresh elections to 2 mayoral posts scheduled for Tuesday

After the directions of the Supreme Court, elections to the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor

of the Municipal Corporation (MC) will be held again on Tuesday.

Following the recent judgment and directions passed by the Supreme Court, Kuldeep Kumar Dhalor has been declared the Mayor.

In accordance with Section 38 of the Punjab Municipal Act, 1976, the MC is mandated to elect one of its elected members as chairperson, known as the Mayor, along with other members to serve as the Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

According to the notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner, the election, as per Regulation 3(1) of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (Procedure and Conduct of Business) Regulations, 1996, will take place on February 27 at 10 am in the Assembly Hall of the MC building and the Mayor will be the presiding authority.

As per the directives of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Chandigarh Police will ensure adequate security measures during the election process to maintain law and order. The BJP has one-vote edge against INDIA bloc partners Congress and AAP in MC House.

The Congress had filed a plea in the High Court for setting aside the elections to the two mayoral posts. The HC is to hear the case on February 26.

When the BJP’s Manoj Sonkar was announced Mayor after eight votes were wrongly declared invalid by presiding officer Anil Masih, Opposition councillors had boycotted the elections to the other two posts, which are conducted by the Mayor.

Since the court has set aside the Mayor’s election and declared Dhalor the winner, the two polls are to be conducted by him.

The BJP councillors, Kuljit Singh and Rajinder Sharma, were declared winners against Congress’ councillors and alliance nominees Gurpreet Singh Gabi and Nirmala Devi to the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively.

Three AAP councillors defected to the BJP recently.
