Gurkaran Singh secured silver medal in the 81kg category at the All-India Inter University Weightlifting Championship. He lifted a total of 300 kg (135kg in snatch and 165kg in clean and jerk) to secure his place on the podium. Gurkaran trains under coach Karanveer Buttar of the UT Sports Department. In the Junior National Championship last month, Gurkaran was able to secure a gold medal, and he has now been selected for the National Games to be held in Uttarakhand.

Gurkaran’s younger brother Paramveer also trains under Buttar and had earlier won a gold medal on his debut at the 2022 Nationals in Bhubaneswar. After winning a bronze in the Panchkula Khelo India Games, he claimed two gold medals at the Nationals Games in Tamil Nadu.

After this, he won another gold at the Khelo India Games in Madhya Pradesh.

The father of both athletes, Gurjeet Singh, has won medals at the international stage in the master’s category. — TNS
