IMD issues yellow alert for heavy rain till August 4 in Chandigarh

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a yellow alert for heavy rain coupled with thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places in Chandigarh and Haryana for the next four days beginning Saturday and in Punjab for two days — Monday and Tuesday.

Releasing the outlook for the rainfall during the second half of the ongoing South West monsoon season (August-September) and monthly rainfall and temperature during August, the weathermen indicated that normal to above normal rainfall is most likely over most parts of the country, including Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana during August and September.

During August, the monthly average maximum temperatures are expected to remain normal to below normal in many regions, including most parts of Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana, according to the IMD.

Meanwhile, the day and night temperatures in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula once again went up on Friday despite light rainfall continuing during the last 24 hours.

While Chandigarh received 9.7 mm of downpour, Mohali and Panchkula experienced 11.5 mm and 0.5 mm rainfall, respectively, during the last 24 hours.

In Chandigarh, the maximum and minimum temperature remained 31.2 and 25.6°C, which was 0.8 and 1.2 degrees above yesterday and 2 and 1.1 degrees below normal, respectively.

With the maximum of 30.7 and minimum of 25.7°C temperature, Mohali remained the least hot in Tricity, Panchkula remained the hottest with 31.8 and 25.9°C maximum and minimum temperature, respectively.

The IMD has predicted a generally and partly cloudy sky with thunderstorms and rain in Tricity for the next five days till August 6. The maximum and minimum temperature is likely to remain between 31 and 24°C, respectively.

“As compared to yesterday, there was a rise of 0.2 and 2.9 degrees in average maximum temperature, which was appreciably below normal by 3.5 and 3.3°C, respectively, in Punjab and Haryana on Friday,” the weathermen said, while recording the region’s highest 35.6°C maximum temperature at Palwal, Haryana, followed by 33.4°C at Samrala in Punjab.

The IMD observed light to moderate rain at many places in Punjab and most places in Haryana while heavy to very heavy rainfall coupled with thunderstorms was experienced at isolated places in both the states.
