An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) died in a hit-and-run incident near the railway overbridge in Kurali. The victim, Surinder Singh, of 82 Battalion, was posted in Rupnagar and going for some work to Chandigarh when the incident took place. Locals said the bike-borne cop, a native of Garhshankar, was headed to Chandigarh when an unidentified vehicle hit him near the overbridge. He was injured and cops took him to hospital, where he was declared dead. The police took the body in possession for further action. TNS

Child dies after falling off roof

Mohali: An eight-year-old boy died after falling off of the second floor of his house in Dhanoni village of Dera Bassi. The victim, who has been identified as Agamvir Singh, the son of Mandeep Singh, was flying a kite on the rooftop when he fell down around 3 pm. The victim was a Class 2 student. He was rushed to the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. TNS

One held with 208 gm opium

Panchkula: The police arrested a man in Pinjore with 204 gm of opium. Acting on a tip-off received during a patrol in HMT Colony, a police team led by crime branch officials set up a surveillance operation in Manakpur Nanak Chand. The accused, identified as Gurmeet Singh alias Mannu, was spotted walking towards the village. During the search, two white waxy foils containingthe opium. The police also recovered Rs 1,000 from the accused. A case under Section 18 of the NDPS Act has been registered. TNS
