Intense spell of rain, snow in northwest from Thursday night; rain in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh from March 1 to 3

The Western Himalayan Region (WHR) will see an “intense spell of rain/snow from the night of February 29,” the IMD said on Wednesday.

There will be rain over plains of northwest from March 1 to 3 with peak intensity on March 1 and 2, the weather office said.

A Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Iran neighbourhood to lower to upper tropospheric levels. High moisture feeding from Arabian Sea to northwest India is also likely during March 1 to 2.

It is very likely to affect WHR from February 29 and plains of northwest from March 1 to 3 with peak intensity on March 1 and 2.

Under its influence, fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are very likely over WHR from the night of February 29 to March 3, the weather office said.

Scattered to fairly widespread light/moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) is very likely over Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi and scattered light/moderate rain over Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh on March 1 and 2.

Isolated heavy rain/snow are also very likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh on March 1 and isolated heavy to very heavy rain/snow on March 2.

Isolated heavy rain/snow is also very likely over Uttarakhand on March 1 and 2 and isolated heavy rain over Punjab on March 2. 

Hailstorm activity is also very likely at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab on March 1 and 2; over Rajasthan on March 1 and over Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh on March 2.

Strong surface winds (30-40 kmph) are likely over northwest India on March 1 and 2, according to the IMD.
