Panchkula, August 12
Nine policemen, including the Station House Officer of the Sector 14 police station, were injured after a police team was allegedly attacked with stones, rods and sharp weapons by two families involved in a clash on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
The police have registered a case against 13 persons from both families.
The suspects have been identified as Sumer, Radha, Usha, Kulwinder, Sanjay, Sagar, Meeto, Savita, Sunita, Khusi, Sahil, Sundar and Vicky.
Police fire into the air
In self-defence, the police had to fire into the air to disperse the miscreants. Three PCR vehicles were also damaged in the incident. During the incident, a constable suffered a fracture on his wrist and is receiving treatment at the Civil Hospital in Sector 6 while other policemen received minor injuries.
The police have booked them under Sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty), 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to any person being a public servant in the discharge of his duty), and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty).
4 women among 9 arrested
Of the 13 named in the FIR, the police have arrested nine suspects, including four women, so far. Six belong to one group and three to the other.
The suspects from one of the groups have been identified as Sumer, Sanjay, Meeto, Savita and Usha, all residents of Rajiv Colony, and Kulwinder, a resident of Mauli Jagran, while from the other, they have been identified as Sahil, Sunita and Vicky, all residents of Rajiv Colony.
The police said a hunt was on to nab the remaining suspects.
Old animosity the trigger
The two families, neighbours at Rajiv Colony, were fighting and pelting each other with stones from the terrace of their houses.
When the police intervened after receiving a call at the Police Control Room past midnight, they pelted them with stones too.
ACP (Headquarters) Vijay Kumar Nehra said, “Two families were pelting each other with stones at Rajiv Colony. When police teams reached there, the groups started throwing stones at them too. The miscreants also used sticks, knives, rods and other deadly weapons in the attack on the police teams. They managed to escape in the narrow lanes of the colony due to low visibility at night, but eight of them were arrested later. Nine policemen, including Sector 14 police station SHO Rajiv Miglani, suffered minor injuries. The wrist of one of the constables got fractured. We have registered a case. A probe in on.” He said they had already combed the area using a drone.
“We also searched the houses of the suspects and seized sticks and weapons,” he said.
According to the police, old animosity and struggle for dominance in the area resulted in the violent brawl between the two families.
