The Government Medical College in Mohali is expected to start its maiden session from August next year.

If go by the claims of OP Soni, Minister of Medical Education and Research, Punjab, the college would start its MBBS course with 100 seats.

“Construction work for the required infrastructure is on at the Civil Hospital in Phase 6 here. The first phase of the work will be completed by June next year,” said the minister, adding that further work would be completed in four phases in coming five years.

When contacted, Dr Akash Aggarwal, Joint Director, Research and Medical Education, Punjab, said: “Admission for MBBS course will start from June next year as per the guidelines of the Medical Council of India (MCI). Recruitment of faculty is already on and the process is in advanced stage. The required number of faculty members will be appointed by March 2020.”

Auditorium, labs, operation theatres, etc., were already available in the Punjab Health System Corporation building, which had been taken over for the project. The building would be used as part of the college, he said.

The department is said to be preparing the lists of the faculty by coordinating with the Government Medical College, Patiala.

Punjab Health System Corporation has already set the deadline of March 2020 to complete the construction work of the college.

It is to be noted that a team of the Medical Council of India (MCI) had inspected the site in November to take stock of the ongoing work. MCI officials had also raised certain objections at that time.

Dr Aggarwal said the objections in question were being resolved. The MCI would carry out next inspection before April next year.

“The college will also have hostel facility,” said the joint director.
