Zirakpur, May 17

A 23-year-old man set himself on fire near Dashmesh Enclave in Dhakoli on Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as Pankaj Ahuja.

Ahuja, who worked at a tailor shop, took the extreme step at a lonely place near the Verka booth in the vicinity of his house. Some passersby saw the victim in flames and informed the police.

An ambulance was called and he was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him dead, said the police.

The police took the body in possession and shifted it to the mortuary at Dera Bassi hospital.

The body was handed over to the kin of the deceased today, said the police.

The police have recorded the statement of deceased’s father under Section 174 of the CrPc at the Dhakoli police post, said Sub-Inspector Gulab Singh.

The deceased used to consume alcohol and other intoxicants. Family members also said Ahuja was mentally upset for the past sometime, said the police.
