Massive fire erupts in Shastri Nagar scrap godown; controlled after hours of operation

A major fire broke out late on Wednesday night in a scrap godown near Fish Market, Shastri Nagar, triggering panic in the area as flames and smoke engulfed nearby streets.

Residents rushed out of their homes as fire tenders battled the blaze for hours before bringing it under control.

According to a spokesperson from the Manimajra Fire Station, the control room received an alert around 11:30 pm, following which two teams led by Leading Fireman Prashant Kumar were immediately dispatched to the site.

The teams managed to contain the fire after nearly four hours of continuous effort, finally returning to the station around 4 am.

The spokesperson added that a fresh alert was received again early this morning after reports indicated that the fire had reignited in parts of the debris. The fire team was promptly sent back to the location to prevent further spread.

He further stated that the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, and a detailed examination by fire officers will be conducted today to determine the origin and circumstances of the incident.

Previously, on Diwali, a similar incident was reported near Shastri Nagar, drawing much attention to open scrap godowns that are vulnerable to such fires, often caused by the bursting of firecrackers in the vicinity. Many scrap dealers on the city’s periphery, as well as in Sectors 42 and 24, reportedly keep scrap material outside their shops in residential areas, creating conditions conducive to such mishaps.
