After joining the office today, Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla visited the dumping ground at Dadu Majra and took stock of the ongoing waste management and bio-mining project.
The Mayor, accompanied by Amit Kumar, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation (MC), and other officers concerned, assessed the status of the project. The visit was aimed at exploring ways to enhance the capacity of the waste management set-up.
The Commissioner briefed the Mayor on the process of segregating wet and dry waste. He explained how various types of waste were handled to minimise their hazardous impact on the environment.
The Commissioner also highlighted the ongoing efforts to ensure daily waste processing at the site. A key focus of the discussion was the initiative to produce bio-soil from organic waste, which could be utilised for agricultural and landscaping purposes.
The Mayor stressed making the site cleaner and greener. She asked the officers to make the dumping site clean and beautiful. Trees such as “neem” and oxygen-rich species may be planted near the boundary wall of the dump, she said.
The Mayor further encouraged all municipal officers to work diligently towards this goal. The officers apprised the Mayor that the entire dumping ground would be cleaned before August this year.
Soon after joining the office, the Mayor held a meeting with the Commissioner and discussed various issues of planning and development. She has called a meeting of the councillors at 3 pm on Monday to discuss various issues faced by the corporation.
Babla has also called a General House meeting on February 7, during which elections to the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) will take place. The committee approves agenda items related to projects with a budgets of up to Rs 50 lakh each.
As per MC Act, newly elected Mayor calls F&CC elections in the first meeting, in which five-member of the committee are elected. This committee holds a significant decision-making power, as it clears major agendas related to development projects.
