In a determined move to enforce solid waste management rules, the Municipal Corporation conducted a special challaning drive in different parts of the city today. The drive targeted residents who failed to comply with the mandatory household waste segregation norms.

A total of 205 challans were issued to individuals found handing over non-segregated waste to door-to-door collectors, while 34 challans were issued to violators for littering. The action was in line with the Solid Waste Management Rules, which require all citizens to strictly segregate waste at the source. Dry waste (paper, plastic, metal, etc) and wet waste (kitchen and food waste) must be stored and handed over separately to the garbage collectors.

During the drive, officials not only took punitive action, but also educated defaulters about the importance of waste segregation in reducing environmental hazards, improving recycling efficiency and maintaining cleanliness in the city.

Speaking about the action, MC Commissioner Amit Kumar said that non-compliance of the rules will not be tolerated, and such drives will be conducted regularly across all sectors.

“It is the responsibility of every resident to contribute towards a cleaner Chandigarh,” he stated, adding that segregation of waste at source is not a choice — it is the law.
