This was decided by Ravi Kant Sharma, Mayor, and KK Yadav, MC Commissioner, during a visit to the cremation grounds at Mani Majra, the Industrial Area, Phase 1, and Sector 25. They decided that the cremation charges of the poor would be incurred from the Covid cess.

During the visit to the Mani Majra cremation ground, the Mayor asked the sanitary staff to maintain proper cleanliness. The team was apprised by priests that Rs3,000 was being charged for the cremation and Rs1,200 for the “samagri” for bodies of Covid victims and Rs1,500 for the “samagri” in case of non-Covid deaths.

City Congress president Subhash Chawla and Leader of the Opposition in the MC House Devinder Singh Babla had raised the issue earlier. — TNS
