A policeman died after a bullet got accidentally fired from his gun and hit his face while cleaning the weapon, the police said.

The victim has been identified as Balkar Singh (50), a resident of Chuni Kalan village in Fatehgarh Sahib district. Balkar Singh was posted as an Assistant Sub-Inspector at the First India Reserve Battalion (IRB), Punjab.

Mohali SP (City) HS Virk said, “Balkar Singh was sitting inside a tent near the police naka. While cleaning his weapon, a bullet from his gun hit his face.”

Airport police station SHO Shivi Brar said the incident took place around 11.30 am today when ASI Balkar Singh was performing his duty at a police naka near the international airport here. “The weapon was dirty and the bullet was stuck in the barrel, which got accidentally fired, resulting in the death of the cop on the spot. He was shifted to the Civil Hospital in Phase 6 where his postmortem will be conducted tomorrow. Balkar Singh was serving the police for the past around 30 years,” said Brar.
