Monsoon advances, rain likely in Chandigarh today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted an increase in rainfall activity over Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana from June 25 to 30.
“The south-west monsoon has further advanced over parts of Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana,” the Weather Department said. It has predicted light to moderate rain at many places in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana on June 25, 28, 29 and 30 and at a few places on June 26 and 27.
“The rain spell is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning at isolated places during this period over Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana,” the IMD said, while warning of heavy rainfall at isolated places in the region from June 27 to 30.
It has even predicted very heavy rainfall also likely at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana on June 25 and 26,
Meanwhile, the day and night mercury dipped slightly in the city during the past 24 hours. The light rain coupled with overcast sky and moderate winds gave some respite from the hot weather conditions but the rising relative humidity levels continued to irk the residents in the tricity.
The weathermen have issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorm/ lightning at isolated places in Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana on Wednesday, Thursday, and yellow alert for heavy rain with thunderstorm/ lightning from Friday to next Monday.
On Tuesday, the maximum temperature went down by 1.5 notches after rising by 1.6 degrees on Monday while the minimum temperature dipped by 1 degree during the past 24 hours after climbing 0.5 degree on Sunday night.
While Chandigarh received 4 mm rain, while Mohali and Panchkula remained dry during the day.
The weathermen have predicted a generally cloudy sky with thunderstorms and rain in the tricity region comprising Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula over the next five days till June 29. The maximum temperature will remain below 31° Celsius.
The local residents experienced a relatively less warm night on Monday with the minimum temperature settling down to 27.4° Celsius.
Bathinda in Punjab and Faridabad in Haryana recorded the highest minimum temperature of 30.4 and 30.3° Celsius, respectively, to be the warmest towns in the region on Monday night.
The residents of the tricity region experienced a relatively less hot but humid day on Tuesday with the maximum day temperature decreasing slightly as compared to Monday.
June 10 had recorded the maximum temperature of 44 degree Celsius, which had remained the season’s hottest day here so far.
The IMD has predicted relief from the hot weather conditions during this week, beginning Wednesday.
According to the Meteorological Centre Chandigarh, the department’s observatory at Sector 39 recorded the maximum temperature of 34.1° Celsius while the one at the Indian Air Force (IAF) airport logged 32.8° Celsius on Tuesday.
It said the temperatures in the tricity will remain maximum between 29 and 31° Celsius and minimum between 25 and 27° Celsius with possibility of rain coupled with generally cloudy sky and thunderstorm till June 29.
