Aam Aadmi Party’s MP from Anandpur Sahib, Malwinder Kang, who had remained the Panjab University Campus Student Council president for two consecutive terms (2002-2003 and 2003-2004), today sought the intervention of university Chancellor and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar to ensure timely conduct of elections to the PU Senate.

In a letter to Dhankhar, Kang said an attempt to replace the elections with nominations would suppress the democratic structure of the university. Kang wrote that the election notification that was supposed to come in January 2024 was yet to be issued, sparking widespread anxiety within the university’s academic and alumni circles.

“There are reports suggesting that the election process might be replaced by nominations. Such an alteration would undermine the university’s democratic ethos and diminish the voice of the graduate electorate, which has always played a critical role in the governance of the institution,” he added.
