Chandigarh, August 4
A local court today remanded Malwinder Singh Sidhu, a retired AIG of Punjab Police, in two-day police custody. He is accused of shooting his son-in-law, Harprit K Singh.
The police had requested three-day custody of the accused to investigate the allegations made by the victim’s family, verify the weapon’s authenticity and to examine the motive behind the shooting.
The police are also looking into the allegations levelled by the victim’s family that more people might have been involved in the incident. They were also investigating whether the .32 bore weapon recovered from the scene was licensed or illegal one.
The autopsy of the victim was done today.
Harprit was shot at a mediation centre in the District Courts, Sector 43, on Saturday. Four shots were fired, two hit Harprit. The shooting occurred amidst an ongoing matrimonial dispute between Harprit and his wife, whom he married in 2020. The victim's father, Karnail Singh, has alleged that Malvinder, along with others, hatched a conspiracy to kill his son.
"On Saturday, they were called at the mediation centre and they reached on time. They kept waiting and the accused arrived there after around one and a half hours. Malvinder intentionally came late to execute his plan to kill my son," he alleged. —TNS
