Chandigarh, December 13

The Syndicate has given a green signal to the two part-time certificate courses proposed at the Department-cum-Centre for Women Studies and Development and an MBA in capital market at the UIAMS.

While one course at the Centre for Women Studies and Development is titled ‘Governance and leadership in human resource management’, the other one is called ‘Governance and leadership in political parties and electoral process’.

A five-member committee, in the meeting of Board of Studies in Governance and Leadership, deliberated on the new certificate courses and rules and regulations for masters in governance and leadership courses on December 7. It was resolved that the same rules and regulations for masters in other social sciences courses, in accordance with the PU Calendar, will apply to the masters in governance and leadership courses. It was also resolved that online courses on SWAYAM website will be started from academic session 2020-2021.

Constituted by the PU VC to look into the budgetary and viability aspects of a course proposed to be started under the self-financing scheme, a five-member committee on December 11 floated a proposal to start a course in MBA (capital market) at the UIAMS from the next academic session. The proposal was speculated upon this month after the Syndicate approved of it in principle and wanted the course’s budgetary viability accessed.

Vedic astrology to be reviewed

University’s Undergraduate Board of Studies (UGBOS) in Sanskrit had sought the Syndicate’s approval for ratifying the regulations and fixing exam dates in four of its courses— Jyotish Bhaskar or Certificate Course in Vedic Astrology, Jyotish Ratna or Diploma Course in Vedic Astrology, Jyotish Daivajna or Advanced Diploma in Vedic Astrology) and Ayur-Daivajna or Specialised Diploma in Medical Astrology— for the current academic session. However, the PU’s top governing body has sent the course to be reviewed by the board.

A number of syndics have expressed concern over the varsity’s tie-up with a private institute for teaching vedic astrology on the campus. The courses have been designed by a Mohali-based private institute called the Institute of Vedic and Astrological Sciences and are in accordance with an MoU signed on May 24 between PU, through the Department of Sanskrit, with the Institute, through its authorised signatory Sudhir Batish (honorary director).
