Chandigarh, June 23

For the construction of a new model jail, the UT Administration has invited bids for preparation of environmental impact assessment.

He said tenders could be submitted from tomorrow and July 2 would be the last date for submitting the bids. The new jail would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs18 crore on nearly six acres.

With a sanctioned strength of 1,120 inmates, including 1,000 men and 120 women, the existing Model Jail, which is spread over 14 acres, has barracks, offices and residential accommodation for jail employees.

The new jail will be able to house nearly 376 inmates. There will be five barracks for 70 inmates each. With a capacity of 26 persons, there will also be exclusive barracks for hardened criminals.

The new jail will have a skill-development centre, study centre, central tower, kitchen, administrative block, anganwadi kitchen and a waiting hall.
