'No post-mortem till FIR is lodged': IPS officer's kin stand firm during meet with Haryana CM

The wife of late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, Amneet P Kumar, has submitted a detailed and urgent complaint to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini, pressing for immediate action following the suicide of her husband. During a meeting with the Chief Minister, the bereaved family made it clear that they are unwilling to proceed with the post-mortem or last rites of Y Puran Kumar until an FIR is filed against those named in his suicide note and the related complaint. The family also conveyed that they are currently awaiting the arrival of their elder daughter from the USA, and no final rites will take place until her return and the registration of the FIR.

Amneet P Kumar’s letter emphasises her profound anguish and the community-wide sense of injustice following the loss of Y Puran Kumar, who was a decorated police officer and recipient of the President’s Medal for Meritorious Service. Citing his legacy as a symbol of honesty, dedication, and inspiration for the Scheduled Caste community, she described his death as a blow to thousands who saw him as an emblem of empowerment and justice.

The complaint highlights that despite the existence of a clear and explicit suicide note and a formal complaint identifying those responsible for creating a hostile work environment, harassment, and mental torture, no FIR has been registered even 48 hours after the incident. Amneet noted that this omission persists despite cognizable offences being disclosed under the law, particularly under the Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The letter further claims that no inquiry is under way against the powerful high-ranking officials of Haryana Police and the administration mentioned in the suicide note. The family expressed apprehension that these individuals might attempt to malign or implicate them further in retaliation for raising the complaint.

She underscored that this issue is not limited to one officer’s death but has far-reaching implications for faith in justice, equality, and the rule of law. She called on the Chief Minister to take firm and swift action to restore public confidence and provide justice for her late husband and the wider community.

Demands raised

In her appeal, Amneet Kumar requested the following actions:

• Immediate registration of an FIR against all individuals named in the suicide note and complaint, to be treated as a dying declaration and crucial evidence.
• Immediate suspension and arrest of the accused to prevent interference, tampering of evidence, or undue influence on the investigation.
• Permanent security cover for the bereaved family, especially the two daughters, due to credible threats and ongoing distress.
• Protection of the family’s rights and dignity, shielding them from further harassment and pressure from those responsible.
