Chandigarh, November 28

The UT Education Department today released the names of 91 unrecognised schools, along with their addresses, in the public domain. The department has appointed 10 nodal officers whom students and parents of unrecognised schools can contact for admissions.

During an Advisory Council meeting on the Right to Education Act, it was decided to oversee the admission of the passouts of these schools to higher classes — Class VI or IX.

The decision to name and shame unrecognised schools was taken in July this year.

Rubinderjit Brar, Director, School Education, said: “The names of unrecognised schools are now available in the public domain so that parents become cautious before admitting their child to any of these schools. The principals of 10 government schools will assist parents in getting admission to their wards.”

Brar said, “Four new government school buildings are ready and we will try to accommodate more students from these schools.”

The department now aims at adjusting students enrolled in unrecognised schools in the newly constructed school buildings as a whopping 10,000 students study in pre-nursery to KG in unrecognised schools.

An inspection of these schools carried out by the department had revealed that they lacked fire safety measures, proper ventilation, playground, etc. The access to some schools is not proper and some are managed by a single teacher in one or two rooms with strength as low as 17 students. However, around 25 to 30 schools were found fit for recognition during inspection.
