Members of the Punjab Nursing Association today staged a protest on the Chandigarh-Kharar highway near Desu Majra in support of their demands, much to the chagrin of local residents.

Late in the evening, heated discussion ensued between the protesters and local residents. The residents requested the agitators to shift their protest to some other place which does not cause inconvenience to them.

Eyewitnesses said the protest near the Kharar bus stand led to traffic jam and affected the movement of vehicles on the busy road in the afternoon.

Kharar resident Jaspreet Kaur, a college student, said: “It has become a nightmare for commuters who remain stuck in traffic jam for three to four hours daily. A few days ago, children travelling in local buses had nowhere to go to relive themselves for five to six hours on the flyover.”

People living in nearby Kharar villages are now up in arms and have started making announcements from village gurdwara not to support the protesters. Office-goers, schoolchildren, farmers and businessmen are suffering a lot due to the protest, the residents said. — TNS
