The joint teams of GMADA, the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) and the Police Department removed temporary encroachments in Phase 11 today. The drive is being carried out by the MC and GMADA after the Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC) issued orders regarding civil writ petition (CWP) No. 15892 of 2020 and COCP No. 4984 of 2025.

The fruit and vegetable market on the GMADA land near the residential area was once again evicted after a prolonged tussle with vendors and encroachers. The MC’s enforcement wing faced stiff resistance from vendors, their family members and women as they entered into tussle with the staff. During the brawl, fruits and vegetables fell from makeshift structures on the ground.

MC Superintendent Mandeep Singh said, “Encroachments were removed from here on Friday, but vendors back again. They were completely removed from here today. A few troublemakers, who rake up unnecessary issues here, have also been evicted. A large area of the Phase 11 is covered with encroachments. These will soon be removed while following the legal procedure.”

Both temporary and permanent encroachment on backside of the market, on footpath, the green area and the government land are being removed as per the High Court directions. The anti-encroachment drive is being carried out in the city for the last 10 days.

Earlier, encroachments were removed in Phase 4, Phase 5, and Phase 11. The civic body had issued a notice to owners on November 28 to remove encroachments on their own within next three days or they would have to pay penalty. “No separate notice of any kind to anyone will be issued after this,” the notice read.
