Ashish Verma. Ved Prakash and Sumit Thakur claimed top three positions, respectively, in the archery event during the first-ever sports carnival for persons on wheelchairs, held at the Lake Sports Complex. Kaushlya Devi won a consolation prize.

In men’s canoeing VL-I category, Hari Krishan, Surender and Santosh Pandey claimed top three positions, respectively, while in the men’s VL-II category, Manjeet, Ashish and Kumaran Shen bagged top three positions, respectively.

In women’s canoeing, Reena claimed the first position, followed by Asha and Bhawana. In the dragon boat, the team of Apurva, Rajan, Amit Kumar and Shiv Ganga claimed the top spot, followed by the team of Avtar Singh, Rahul, Dilbagh Singh and Raman at second position and the team of Man Mohan, Varun Kumar and Parmjeet Singh came third.

In fencing Krishna, Varun, Devinder and Reena won the foil event while Sumit, Ashish, Avtar and Dilbag won the epee event and Santosh, Shailesh, Ved Prakash and Rahul won the sabre event.

Earlier, the sports carnival was inaugurated by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit. The event was organised by Chandigarh Spinal Rehab, Sector 28.

“Participants from across the country, including Himachal Pradesh, Haryana Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh, competed in the event. This was a unique event, which saw participation of over 50 wheelchair- bound persons and included national boating and canoe racing championships for para-athletes, besides archery, fencing, javelin and a friendly kabbadi match,” said Nicky P Kaur, Founder of Chandigarh Spinal Rehab.
