PCR vehicles in Chandigarh to be equipped with 4 cameras

To enhance vigilance, the Chandigarh Police is planning to install cameras with live streaming and recording capabilities on police control room (PCR) vehicles. These PCR vehicles, which are stationed throughout the city, serve as first responders to distress calls and crime scenes and also patrol the city streets.

The police said the footage recorded by these cameras would be used as evidence to address allegations of inaction or delayed response by the police personnel in these vehicles. Each PCR will be equipped with four high-definition cameras positioned to capture everything occurring around the vehicle.

The cameras will also have the ability to send live feeds to the centralised police command and communication room.

A police official stated that the system would enable the recording of incidents where the PCR staff was present and allow for real-time monitoring of situations. “This will facilitate the rapid deployment of the nearest patrol vehicle, whenever necessary. The system will be particularly useful during agitations or protests, helping to identify and monitor suspicious individuals in crowds,” said an official.

These cameras will also help in governing paths followed by the PCRs during patrolling.

Initially, cameras will be installed in 10 PCR vehicles. The Police Department has already invited bids for the purchase and installation of these cameras and will conduct demonstrations to ensure that the cameras can record high-quality footage both day and night.

Presently, there are around 60 PCR vehicles deployed in the city. The police currently monitor the city roads through high resolution CCTV cameras installed at various junctions that has helped it in cracking several crimes.
