Youth held for abetting suicide
Chandigarh: The UT police have arrested a youth of UP for abetment of suicide, after a student of an institute died by suicide in her hostel room at Sector 42. Divyam Kapoor had been booked on a complaint filed by the victim’s mother. Vidhi Sud died on January 16 and left a suicide note. A case has been registered at the 36 police station. TNS
Four years on, PO lands in police net
Chandigarh: A proclaimed offender (PO), who had been on the run for the past four years, has been arrested by the Operations Cell of the UT police. The police said the accused, Sanjay, alias Ganji (25), a resident of Dera Bassi, was arrested in a case under the Arms Act in August 2017 and declared a PO in September, 2019. TNS
SGPC poll: 40,000 voters enrolled
Mohali: About 40,000 persons have enrolled themselves in the voter list for the SGPC elections. District Electoral Officer Aashika Jain said on Maghi and Gurpurb, 4,517 and 3,657 forms, respectively, were received. She said Mohali contributed 14,303 forms, Dera Bassi 13,209 and 12,733 forms received from Kharar so far. As many as 22,490 forms had been submitted by women and 17,399 by men. The last date for the submission of forms is February 29. TNS

Fatehgarh Sahib: Various religious and social organisations in Sirhind submitted a memorandum to the DC, demanding closure of wine and meat shops on the occasion of Pran Pratishtha ceremony to be held in Ayodhya on January 22. A representative said the ceremony was an auspicious day for the country and such shops should remained closed for a day. oc
Missing girls reunite with kin
Fatehgarh Sahib: Two minor girls were handed over to their families by the Child Welfare Committee. ASI Sirhind Police Station Jagroop Singh said that the girls had gone to langar in Hamayunpur on Gurpurb and lost their way home due to fog. Around 3 pm, the police received information that two girls in Adarsh Nagar were wandering in a state of panic. The girls were taken to the District Child Welfare Department and later handed over to their families. oc
