Sandeep Patel, Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the PGIMER, Chandigarh, has been honoured with the prestigious gold medal for best published orthopaedic research of 2024. The award was presented at the 69th National Conference of the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOACON) in Bengaluru, recognising Patel’s groundbreaking contributions to orthopaedic research. He is specialised in regenerative medicine and orthobiologics.

Dr Patel’s innovative basic research on the chondroprotective role of single PRP injection for osteoarthritis in guinea pigs brought him the accolades. His study has established crucial insights into the therapeutic potential of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), paving the way for enhanced treatments for knee osteoarthritis.

Dr Patel’s research journey with PRP began in 2010, when his team conducted the world’s first randomised controlled trial demonstrating PRP’s superiority in knee osteoarthritis management.

With nearly 20 publications focusing exclusively on PRP and knee osteoarthritis over the past 15 years, Dr Patel has cemented his reputation as a global leader in orthobiologics research.
