Prof Vishali Gupta of the Advanced Eye Centre, PGIMER, has become the first India-based clinician-scientist to receive the prestigious gold medal of the International Uveitis Study Group (IUSG).

The IUSG, an elite global body comprising around 150 leading experts in ocular inflammation, bestows the honour only once in four years, selecting a researcher who has made exceptional scientific contributions to the field of uveitis.

The award is regarded as one of the most competitive distinctions in the specialty and is finalised through a rigorous two-stage voting process involving all IUSG members. Prof Gupta will receive the gold medal and deliver the gold medal lecture at the group’s next meeting in Tübingen, Germany, in July 2026.

Expressing her gratitude, Prof Gupta acknowledged her mentor, Prof Amod Gupta, for his constant guidance and thanked PGIMER for providing the academic environment and global exposure that shaped her career. She described the recognition as a proud moment not only for her but also for the Indian ophthalmology fraternity.
