Chandigarh, November 23

The fourth law convocation of the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) five-year integrated law honours course and Department of Laws was organised at the Gymnasium Hall of Panjab University today.

Justice Surya Kant, Supreme Court of India, was the chief guest. The function was presided over by Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof (Dr) Raj Kumar.

Justice Rajiv Sharma, Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain and Justice Daya Choudhary of the Punjab and Haryana High Court were the guests of honour. Prof Shankarji Jha, DUI, PU; Anu Chatrath, senior advocate and Dean, Faculty of Law, PU; Prof Rattan Singh, Director, UILS; Prof Meenu Paul, Chairperson, Department of Laws; and Prof Harminder S Bains, Panjab University Swami Sarvanand Giri Regional Centre (PUSSGRC), Hoshiarpur, were also present.

As many as 800 postgraduate and graduate students from the UILS and the Department of Laws were awarded degrees on the occasion.

Sumit Kansal from the Dept of Laws (batch 2016) was awarded the gold medal by Justice Surya Kant. Kansal is also a chartered accountant and a graduate of Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University.

Senior Advocate Anu Chatrath announced that 23 medal winners would be given a cash award of Rs 2,100 each, under the aegis of the GK Chatrath Memorial Fund.

Justice Surya Kant congratulated the postgraduate and graduate students. He laid emphasis on ideals and ethics that rule the profession. He told the students to be ever vigilant and alert to the changing realities and always fight for the marginalised and the under privileged.

A vote of thanks was presented by PU Registrar Prof Karamjeet Singh.
