Chandigarh, September 20

The Senate elections for the gradate constituency will be held in a phased manner, Panjab University announced here today.

The elections were earlier scheduled to be held in one go on September 26.

The election was to be held at 272 polling booths spread across seven states/UTs, with a total vote count of 3,61,869. However, 61 polling centres across different states have expressed their inability to make available their buildings for setting up of polling booths, said a PU official.

Under such circumstances, the competent authority has ordered to hold the election in phases. In the first phase, polling shall be held at 211 booths on the already notified date of September 26, while the polling on remaining booths will be held in the next phase, the date for which shall be notified separately, the official added.

Thirty-three polling booths have been set up at Chandigarh and one each in Ambala, Bhiwani, Faridabad, Jhajjar, Kaithal, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Panchkula, Panipat, Sirsa and Sonipat. As many as 158 centres have been set up in Punjab, four in Delhi and five in Himachal Pradesh.
