The women’s weightlifting team of Panjab University claimed overall second position in the All India Inter University Weightlifting Championship organised by the Central University of Himachal Pradesh.

The varsity weightlifters earned multiple podium finishes. Vani Puri from Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, and Jivan Lata from Gobindgarh Public College, Alour (Khanna), secured bronze medals with lifts of 75kg in snatch and 95kg in clean and jerk, and 79kg in snatch and 105kg in clean and jerk, respectively.

Devika finished fourth, while Sumit Kaur and Navjot Chaudhary secured sixth and seventh positions, respectively.

The players, coaches, and university’s Director Sports, Dr Rakesh Malik, met PU Vice-Chancellor Professor Renu Vig. Earlier, the university team had also delivered an impressive performance in the North Zone Inter University Championship, where Vani Puri and Jivan Lata won a gold medal each and Devika and Sumit Kaur clinched a silver and a bronze. —TNS
