Punjab’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gautam Cheema was sentenced to eight months in prison today by a CBI court in a criminal conspiracy case involving the kidnapping and trespassing of proclaimed offender Sumedh Gulati in 2014.

Ajay Chaudhary, an Indian Defence Estates Service officer and advocate Varun Utreja were also sentenced to eight months each. The case revolves around the illegal abduction of Gulati, who was allegedly taken from the Phase 1 police station to a hospital. Gulati was a co-accused with realtor Devinder Gill in a fraud case that same year.

Realtors Devinder Singh Gill and his wife Kricpy Khera had claimed IGP Cheema orchestrated false cases against them following a dispute over profit-sharing in a joint property venture.

CBI counsel Lisa Grover confirmed the verdict.
