Addressing the gathering before the march, family members of several victims said they had not received any compensation and that police investigations into the cases had been pending for years.
Satgur Singh, cousin of Ajay Kumar, said Ajay was killed five days after his marriage and that his parents had since developed depression. Naveen Kumar, father of nine-year-old Nehan, who died in an accident last week, said he joined the march so that others would not have to face a similar tragedy.
The event saw participation from people across sections of society, including councillors, traders, industrialists, doctors and residents. The candle march started from Shahi Samadhan and concluded at the spot where Nehan was killed. Participants raised slogans seeking accountability and improved road safety measures.
Meanwhile, the administration swung into action and removed several encroachments along the 4-km-long Circular Road.
Deputy Commissioner Preeti Yadav held a meeting with the PWD Executive Engineer, SDM, EO and police officials, directing them to install traffic lights at three high-risk points, construct speed tables and regulate truck movement during peak hours to reduce accidents.
