Para shutter Sanjeev Kumar has brought laurels to the city by winning gold medal in the Khelo India Para Games in New Delhi. Kumar, who is a regular trainee at the Centre of Excellence for Badminton at the Sector 38 Sports Complex, logged a stunning comeback win over Harish. Kumar, who went down 18-21 in the first game, bounced back strongly in next two games 21-12 21-19 to bag the top honour.

He played in the men’s WH 2 (Wheel Chair) Category. His gold medal was no ordinary feat, as he defeated top seed Abu Hubaida 21-14 21-12 in the semifinal and overpowered Manjunath 21-12 21-15 in the quarterfinal. In the pre-quarterfinal, Kumar defeated Ashwani Kumar 21-14 21-6.

Kumar gave credit to his coaches Surinder Mahajan and Bhavan Sethi for his top performance. He also thanked the UT Sports Department officials, including Director Sports Sourabh Kumar Arora, for supporting him. Kumar also expressed his gratitude to the Chandigarh Badminton Association (CBA) for providing him all possibilities of training with professional shuttlers at the Sector 38 Sports Complex.

Vijayendra, president, CBA, and Priyank Bharti, patron, CBA, have congratulated Kumar. Surinder Mahajan, joint secretary, Badminton Association of India, who is also senior vice-president (administration), announced that the local association will felicitate Kumar for his remarkable achievement.
