Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsA month after the UT Administration reclaimed land from the illegal occupation by a furniture market in Sector 52, a suggestion was made to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday to consider the site for extensive use for its premises. The suggestion came during the hearing of a PIL on the court’s Holistic Development Plan.
The Bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry said the suggestion could also be taken into consideration, along with earlier options of shifting the court to Sarangpur village or the IT Park to address the space crunch.
During the proceedings, the Bench noted submissions that the first question to be settled was whether the High Court should be shifted to a new location at all, and whether all stakeholders, including the Bar, were willing to support the move. The matter will be heard again on August 22.
Making it clear that “no feasible and viable solution” had come forth from either the UT Administration and Bar on the High Court’s shifting to a new site, Bench on previous date of hearing had - for the time being -reverted to the possibility of reviving the previously proposed Holistic Development Plan. It had called for exploring the feasibility of going ahead with the much-debated plan.
“Since there is no feasible and viable solution coming forth from either of the parties, it would be appropriate and in the fitness of things to revert back to explore the possibility of holistic plan being made feasible and viable,” the Bench had asserted.
