A fire broke out in the heaps of tree leaves behind the city’s Nature Park, leaving several trees charred. Fire tenders were rushed to the spot and an investigation was launched to determine the cause.

A similar blaze had broken out in a heap of garbage near the Mauli Baidwan just a day ago, which required multiple fire brigade vehicles to douse the flames.

Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi visited the site, saying, “At first glance, it appears that the fire was deliberately set. Anti-social elements often sit around here and it seems they might have caused the incident. This is extremely unfortunate and shameful because it has led to the burning of trees.”

He further demanded that the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) specifically provide the Municipal Corporation with a designated place where tree leaves can be stored safely.

Residents complained of the toxic smoke posing a major threat to public health.
