Yashpal Garg, Secretary, Social Welfare, UT, said after assessing the status and in consultation with the other states, a Shramik special train for different stations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar had been scheduled for Friday from Chandigarh to Patna (Bihar) with stoppage at many railway stations of both states.

“On its way, the train will have stoppage at Saharanpur, Moradabad, Bareilly, Hardoi, Lucknow, Raibareilly, Amethi, Pratapgarh, Varanasi, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhayaya Junction (Mugal Sarai), Buxar and Ara stations,” he said.

One day before the scheduled departure of the train, telephone calls are made to registered persons asking them to reach the holding centre at Chandigarh College of Engineering Technology (CCET) in Sector 26 where the persons are medically examined and provided packed lunch. Thereafter, they are sent to the railway station by buses.

“The process of contacting the registered persons through SMS and phone call to reach the holding centre on June 19 by 8 am is underway. Those who have not received any call should not come to the centre. Women with small children, pregnant women, handicapped persons and senior citizens are accommodated on priority,” he said.

The process of sending migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons who were stranded in Chandigarh began on May 8. So far, 43,382 stranded persons, migrant workers and students have been sent to their native places — 38,749 by Shramik trains and 4,633 by buses. — TNS
