A snatcher was injured while trying to flee from a police vehicle when he was taken for a recovery of a stolen mobile phone near a bridge on the Ramgarh-Mubarikpur road here on Thursday.

The police had brought the suspect, Ajay Kumar, alias Billa, a resident of Dera Bassi, on a production warrant from Sudhowala Jail in Dehradun for three days following leads in a snatching case registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Dera Bassi police station recently.

The police said during preliminary interrogation, Billa confessed to his involvement in at least 18 cases of snatching registered in the tricity.

On June 4, a police team led by Dera Bassi SHO Sumit Mor was taking him for the recovery of a snatched mobile phone when he attempted to escape by jumping from the police vehicle, but ended up breaking his right leg,the police said.

Dera Bassi DSP Bikramjeet Singh Brar said Billa had a criminal history with snatching cases registered against him in Rishikesh, Panchkula and Dera Bassi.
