Stray dogs attack woman in Chandigarh's Sector 8

A resident of Sector 8-C, who got kidney transplant done about eight months ago, had a harrowing experience on Friday evening when she was brutally attacked by a pack of stray dogs outside her house.

To add to her misery, she did not get treatment at the Sector 19 dispensary and Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, and had to go to a private hospital where she had to spend Rs 43,000 on treatment.

Sharing her experience, the victim, Manju Abbott, a housewife, said she suffered severe bites all over her leg. She was attacked and dragged by the dogs before she was rescued by an old man carrying a stick on the Sector 8 gurdwara road. She was rushed to the nearby hospital by her son as her condition was very critical. She sustained various injuries on her legs and arm. She has been given more than 15 injections as she is a kidney patient and has serious risk of infection.

“No help was given at the Anti-Rabies Clinic in Sector 19. As per the UT Health Secretary, this facility was supposed to be available 24x7 for residents. With the injections going out of stock, dog bite victims are left to fend for themselves. It is strange that staff at the Sector 16 government hospital too was clueless,” complained the victim.

“The incident highlights severe negligence on the part of the Municipal Corporation. These fierce dogs pose serious threats to the safety of residents, particularly children and senior citizens,” she added.

She demanded people who routinely feed these stray dogs should be made responsible for their vaccination and also liable to bear the costs if these canines attack people.
