According to the police, Sandeep Kumar Khurmi, a resident of Sai Majra village, Mohali, was arrested under preventive measures for quarrelling at Attawa in Sector 42.

He reportedly tried to commit suicide by inflicting injuries on himself in the lock-up on the intervening night of March 22 and 23. A police official said the man first started hitting his head against the wall after which he was brought out of the lock-up and made to sit in a room where he again inflicted injuries on his hand using a belt. The police took him to the GMSH-16, from where he was discharged after treatment.

He was released on bail. A case under Section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of the IPC has been registered against the man on a complaint of Home Guards volunteer Ravinder Singh at the Sector 36 police station. — TNS
