Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsExpressing concern over the alleged removal of important subjects from curriculum at various colleges in the city, local MP and former Union Minister Manish Tewari has warned that the move could lead to complete discontinuation of these disciplines in future.
Tewari alleged that this is a deliberate attempt to benefit private interests in the academia. He stated that a large number of students in Chandigarh pursue diverse academic courses that play a vital role in shaping their career. However, recent reports suggest that the administration is gradually phasing out several crucial subjects from the curriculum.
He highlighted the discontinuation of several programmes, including MSc in Chemistry and IT; MA in Sociology and Public Administration; BCA, PGDCA — which, he noted, the Prime Minister himself had termed vital for the country’s future, MPEd and BA in Mathematics.
What makes the situation even more serious, Tewari said, was that the administration was taking such steps without consulting experts or scholars. He said he will raise the issue in Parliament, as it appears to be a strategy to promote private interests at the cost of public institutions.
